Comments:
What about the other guy from Brokeback?

F.W.

Keener was strongly considered for that category. That's a good call. I just couldn't fit her in. It was stiff competition (no pun).

FW (if that is your real name), the other guy from Brokeback is Jake Gyllenhaal and he was much hotter in Jarhead for which he was nominated. Silly.

I clearly do not get out enough... although I'm glad to see that weddign crashers won in comedy.

I've been saying for years that you don't get out enough.

Did I tell you that Ann finally let me get a big screen TV? So sweet... Now I don't have to get out.

-Doc Evil

Oh, man. I'm dying for an HDTV. What did you get LCD, plasma, or projection?

ALso, what brand? I've been researching them. Any advice? Had any problems or anything?

What and Who won the Golden Globes?

F.w.

That's a good question Fred Whitley. It also allows me to brag a little about how dead on the Herndies were.

when are you going to rank music (albums, bands, etc.)? i like reading your commentaries on books i know i'll never read. i'd like to read more, but unless it is in a ecological journal i just have a hard time finding time and commitment. although, andy is probably reading both - but he's been done with comps for several years now - right? i want you or lil' erin to read some of my favorite non-fiction just to see what an esthete of literature thinks about it. i think its great, but sometimes people think what they're into is good when they just don't know what they're missing. you know what i mean? in the meantime, i'm still looking for Herndon's Hundred albums or bands or whatever. by the way, another one your missing from the movies is "the elephant man." this classic has had more of an effect on me than most people i'm close to. first saw it when i was 4 or 5 and it kept me up at night. i still have dreams about it and the movie still keeps me up at night, but now for different reasons. sorry, this is your blog.

Travis,

When you say non-fiction, do you mean ecological journals or something like The River Why? Because I still want to read the river why but I don't know if I can deal with ecological journals, although that would give me points that would be off-the-chart. Little inside joke there. Anyways, who wrote The River Why?

F.W.

Thanks B.

The only movie I have seen is Brokeback, and I don't think any other movie can top it!

Fred

F.W.,
Well 'The River Why' is actually fiction. David James Duncan is the author and wrote one of the other fiction books I've actually read, 'The Brothers K'. The River Why is much better, but you all might snub your nose at it. David James Duncan has also written some essays and regularly contributes to Orion magazine. Wendell Barry and Barry Lopez are by far my favorite non-fiction authors, although both write fiction too.

In terms of your points.. there's no way I can come close to measuring soil moisture and canopy cover at the FACE site...or picking those turd-looking roots (you're not doing that quite right)... I'd have to be in a Shakespearean play or something similar to top that. You win, already! jeez. :)

hey, w.f... if you find river why at mccays cheap buy me a couple of copies (if they've got them). i'll pay you back. i've given away 3 or 4 copies and don't have one for myself.

also, go rent 'the elephant man' this weekend. i told brad and missy about my dreams that i've had about it (i had one in december) and brad bought me the dvd (with a 'from your therapist' on the card).

Travis,

I always welcome suggestions for what to cover on the blog. I've considered some musical rankings, but for some reason I always have trouble with it. I can't put my finger on why. I have no trouble ranking books as different as say The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and War and Peace or movies as diverse as Dumb and Dumber and Full Metal Jacket, but to try and compare the relative importance of say Dwight Yoakum with Modest Mouse, or Johnny Cash and Palace Brothers just about makes my head explode. I don't know, maybe I'll take a stab at doing something. I'll think about it.

Btw, are you listening to the Everybodyfields. We took FW to see them last weekend and I think she thoroughly enjoyed it. They are sort of a poor man's, locally home-grown (Johnson City), version of Gillian Welch (only that the male in the Everybodyfields sings and writes songs as much or more than the female.

i guess it would be hard to rank such disperate artists - are you opposed to rankings by genre? i can see why you haven't done this, but maybe i've been looking forward to it to see how you'd do it.

i've only heard rumors of everybodyfields - my cousin and f.w. have been telling me about them for many months now. haven't seen or heard until today. i finally got on their page this morning after seeing your post and downloaded a couple of songs from their page. really nice so far.

hey f.w., do you have either of their albums? if so, its about time you hook me up with some music after all of these years and probably >12 cds and 2 tapes... :)

Travis,
ok, ok, I win! You're right. But let's not forget the grinding plants also.

I'll look for The River Why, but why do you think I might snub my nose at it?

As for the Everybody Fields, I don't have either album (hmm, Brian) but maybe I will soon. I do owe you some cds but usually I get my music from you.

F.W.
